Traditionally, getting a crown requires multiple appointments and a temporary restoration while a dental laboratory creates the permanent crown. CEREC technology can streamline this process by allowing many dentists to design and create a crown in the office, sometimes in a single visit.

If you’re considering a CEREC crown, here are 4 common questions patients often have.

1. What is a CEREC Crown?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. CEREC technology uses digital imaging, computer-aided design, and an in-office milling machine to create a custom ceramic crown restoration.

Instead of taking traditional physical impressions in many cases, your dentist can use a digital scanner to capture detailed images of your teeth. The crown is then designed digitally, milled from a ceramic block, and placed.

2. Can I Really Get a Crown in One Visit?

You sure can! Often called “same day crowns,” perhaps the biggest attraction of CEREC technology is that many crowns can be completed in a single appointment. Your dentist can prepare the tooth, take digital scans, design the restoration, and manufacture it in the office.

Once the crown has been created and evaluated for fit and appearance, it can be bonded to your tooth.

However, not every patient or every restoration is suitable for same-day treatment. Your dentist will determine whether CEREC is appropriate based on the condition of your tooth and your specific treatment needs.

3. Are CEREC Crowns Durable?

CEREC crowns are made from dental ceramic materials designed to withstand normal biting and chewing forces. With proper care, a CEREC crown can provide long-lasting protection and function for 10 to 15 years.

However, no dental restoration is indestructible. Habits like chewing ice or hard candy or grinding and/or clenching your teeth can damage a crown. Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups and cleanings every 6 months can also help preserve the crown and the tooth underneath it.

If you grind or clench your teeth at night, it’s probably a good idea to ask your dentist about a nightguard to protect them and your restoration.

4. Do CEREC Crowns Look Natural?

Modern dental ceramics can closely resemble the appearance of natural teeth. Your dentist can consider factors such as tooth color, shape, and size when designing your restoration.

The digital design process allows your dentist to create a crown that is customized to your smile. The result can provide both functional support and a natural-looking appearance.

CEREC crowns offer convenience, digital precision, and the potential to complete treatment in a single visit. However, traditional laboratory-made crowns and other restorative options may still be better suited to certain situations. If you need a dental crown, ask your dentist whether CEREC technology is an appropriate option.

About the Author

Dr. Steven Kendrick founded Midwest City Dental Center to provide down-to-earth, personalized comprehensive dental services to the Midwest City, OK community.
