While some are visible on the chewing surfaces of teeth, others tend to hide from view, making them difficult to see without digital imaging. As a result, you may not know if one forms between your teeth until your dentist takes a look. However, there are a few things that can indicate whether an interproximal cavity might be present and if a tooth-colored filling might be in your future.

What Are the Signs of an Interproximal Cavity?

If you think you might have a cavity between your teeth (interproximal), the most common indicators will include:

Intense sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages, sweets, and those that are highly acidic and spicy

Difficulty chewing with the tooth or teeth that are impacted by a cavity

A dull toothache

Dark spots forming on or around the tooth or teeth

Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth

If you notice any of these symptoms, do not wait to see your dentist. Early detection can ensure proper treatment is administered before more complex care is required. For example, your dentist can treat it with a tooth-colored filling if it’s caught early; however, if left untreated, you may need a root canal or tooth extraction.

How Can a Tooth-Colored Filling Help?

Once the dentist spots a cavity between your teeth, they will likely recommend a tooth-colored filling if it has not spread beyond the enamel. This conservative restorative treatment is unlike traditional methods used in the past.

Although amalgam was once the material of choice, it remained visible and oftentimes expanded when exposed to extreme temperatures. This led to further wear and tear, weakening the tooth over time and necessitating a dental crown.

Instead, a tooth-colored filling consists of a highly flexible composite resin. This allows you to keep more of your natural tooth structure and avoid expansion that can weaken your teeth in the future. Once in place, a curing light hardens the color-matched resin, causing it to blend with your smile, produce a comfortable bite, and provide superior protection.

If you want to reduce your risk of developing an interproximal cavity, stick to a good oral hygiene routine and continue to see your dentist biannually for checkups and cleanings. With a healthy diet and willingness to give up unhealthy habits (smoking), you can keep cavities at bay.

About the Author

Dr. Steven Kendrick earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.
